Mr.
Roel Canales is entering his sixth year as a music educator as Associate
Director of Bands at Robert L. Vale Middle School. Mr. Canales comes to
Vale Middle School from Luna Middle School where he spent two years with
one of the finest Triple C bands in NISD as the second Associate
Director. Prior to his tenure at Luna M.S., Canales was Director of
Bands at Central Middle School and Associate Director at Weslaco High
School with the Weslaco Independent School District.
A native of Weslaco, TX, which is located in the Rio Grande Valley,
Canales graduated from Weslaco High School with Honors in 1999. He was a
four year Region XV All-Region band member and a two year Area G
All-Area band member on Tuba. While at Weslaco HS, Canales was part of a
consective sweepstakes program under the direction of Mr. David Isadore
and studied Tuba with Mr. Christopher Chenault. He was in the Weslaco HS
Panther Jazz Band playing tenor & baritone saxophone under the
direction of Mr. Ron Bissett for three years. Mr. Canales was also a
founding member of the South Texas Youth Symphony, located in McAllen,
TX, his senior year, under the direction of Dr. David Davenport.
He then went to Texas A&M University – Kingsville, formally Texas
A&I, where he earned his Bachelor of Music, Cum Laude, in December
2003. While at TAMUK, Canales was a member of the “Pride of South
Texas” Marching Band for four years and was under the direction of Dr.
G. Bryan Herring and Mr. Jeff Stone. Mr. Canales studied Tuba with Mr.
Richard Morgan and Mr. Dan Sipes and studied music education with Dr.
Greg Sanders, Mr. Bryce Taylor, and Dr. Paul Hagaman.
He was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity for
his term at TAMUK.
Mr. Canales
serves as a consultant, clinician, and adjudicator at several high
schools and middle schools in the South Texas area. He also performs in
the South Texas area as a Low Brass Artist.
Mr. Canales is excited to be opening a new school and to be building a
new program. He strives to convey the
traits of dedication, perseverance, motivation, and discipline in all
his students. He takes pride in their achievements both musically and
academically.
Mr. Canales enjoys
spending his free time relaxing
with family and friends including his wife Meredith & stepson
Mitchell and enjoys reading & barbequing.
